Music and ME πŸ’œ

Hey guys! If you don't know me already, my name is Haylee Jones. I am currently a freshman here at Converse majoring in Vocal Performance and Politics. I live in West Virginia and have for a big part of my life, but I was actually born in Baltimore, Maryland! I've been singing for basically my whole life, and started doing theatre when I was twelve. I've been in ten shows and am currently in my eleventh right now; I'd have to say my favorite role I've played was Ellie Blake in "Freaky Friday." I fear I get type cast as an angsty teen because of my sass. Aside from musical theatre, I also love to sing classical, jazz, and soul music. Aside from singing, I also enjoy going out with my friends, reading, and TACO BELL!!!!

Pictured below is me and my beautiful little sister Ryder :) She's seven years old and my best friend!!

Now let's talk about music!!

1. What's in my rotation?

Two of my favorite things are joy and whimsy. This is also reflected in my music taste; although I'll listen to anything, my favorite band is by far The Sundays. I love their lighthearted indie sound, especially in their second album Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. It just always lifts my mood and it's so fun to sing in the car when I'm driving the 6.5 hours here from home πŸ«©. I've been coming back to it lately (but did it really ever leave) and so I thought I'd share it here.

It's just so fun! Like yes queen sing those words and I'll figure out what the hell you're saying later! I fear Harriet Wheeler can say whatever she wants and I'll listen to it. But seriously, how can you be sad when a fun little guitar is in your ear?

2. My walk-out song

Okay so hear me out... "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy would be the best walk-out song ever. It's not like hardcore or anything but it would upbeat enough to hype up the crowd and it would be super iconic. Like tell me you wouldn't have a giggle if your favorite baseball player walked out to Shaggy trying to get out of cheating on his girl.

3. I don't know if I resonate with this...

TAYLOR SWIFT. I am sorry. If you like her that's great, I love that music is able to bring you joy, but I cannot listen to her. I just am not the biggest fan of her songwriting and feel that her music lacks the qualities I seek for my playlists. I just also don't like her as a person (at least in the way that she has portrayed herself to the media), and since she says that her experiences and personality greatly influence her music, I have a hard time separating the two.

Like what is going on here? Also the concept of the random French in the music video and then the song jump scaring you? Okay I guess... But really if you enjoy her music that's great and I'm so happy for you.

Overall, I just love talking about music. It's my greatest passion in life and I'm super excited to learn about music from around the world. But anyway, that's my first blog! Thanks for the taking the time to know me and I'm excited to get to know you all too! Also count how many times I said "I fear" in this post.

  1. Similar to another person I commented on, I've noticed that you also do not have a fondness for Taylor swift, I completely agree with you on your opinion on how she isn't your thing because she isn't my thing either. I love the fact that the walk on song you chose is a freaking shaggy song, I love some of his songs so I had a blast seeing this.

  2. I really enjoyed seeing all the variety when it came to the music you like, and I also think it's amazing you've been in 10 shows. Another thing I loved was the distaste for Taylor Swift.

  3. Hey Haylee! I love the walk up song you chose, I think it fits the role of walk up song perfectly. Now onto Taylor Swift, I will say I do like some of her songs, I'm not a die hard fan or anything and the song you chose is probably her worst so I understand having no appeal to it (I also don't like it). Shockingly enough, you only say 'I fear' 3 times, I did in fact command F it.

  4. Hey Haylee, First I just want to say I'm glad you could find Converse a place to continue growing as a vocalist and learn more about music. 10 shows and working on your 11th? You good that's big. I hope that you can continue to raise that number and be in something big.

  5. HAYLEE!! You and I will always share a love for similar music, especially The Sundays, so I was very pleased to find them on here (oh Harriet Wheeler, the woman that you are...). I do think I can find some Taylor Swift songs you might like (trust there are good ones out there), but if not, thats okay too. I cannot wait to see what Jaylee Hones and the Blogettes have in store for this Jan Term.
